Girls Basketball: Your 2022 Foothill League Champions
Just as they planned, the Canyon Girls Varsity Basketball Team is your 2022 Foothill League Champion! After countless hours of hard work, discipline, dedication, and much more, the girls secured the title after their last league game against the Saugus Centurions on Feb. 4, 2022.
Coming into their final league match the Cowboys were tied with the Hart Indians. As long as both teams won their last league game, they would share the champion title.
Canyon finished the job by handing the Centurions a 65-49 loss. Josie Regez led the Cowboys by scoring a career-high of 22 points. Junior point-guard Aaliyah Garcia and senior shooting-guard Genesis Gonzalez added 17 points to the win.
The girls celebrated their victory by rallying while unrolling a Foothill League Champions poster to take pictures with. During their celebration, the Cowboys found out Hart had fallen short to the Valencia Vikings leaving Canyon as the sole 2022 Girls Basketball Foothill League Champions.
Shocked and excited, the girls dropped the poster and cheered as loud as they could while embracing each other and jumping higher than ever. “Being able to celebrate such a huge accomplishment with my teammates after a high-stakes game was a great feeling. Even though sharing the title would’ve been okay, I’m glad our determination paid off and we came out on top,” said junior center Brielle Miller.
Following league, the girls became the number 1 seed in the Southern Section Division 3AA for playoffs. League play may be finished, but the girls’ season is not over yet.
