The Resurrection of Platform Shoes
What if I told you the taller the shoe the better? Along with mom jeans, biker shorts, and scrunchies, platform shoes have made a comeback!
Adopted from Ancient Greece, the trend of platform shoes began in the 1970s. Big names like Elton John and David Bowie, and brands like Gucci, Alexander McQueen, and Versace promoted platform shoes. Now over 50 years later, the trend is being recycled!
Platform shoes can be paired with an array of clothes which is probably why once again, they have grabbed the attention of the world. They can be seen styled with flared jeans, baggy sweatshirts, shorts, and even dresses.
Not only are celebrities like Olivia Rodrigo, Zendaya, and Lady Gaga, participating in the fashion trend, but so are teenagers around the globe, including students at Canyon. I like “the vibe [platform shoes] give my outfits and [they] make me feel less conscious about my height,” says senior Katelyne Abalos.
There are many different platform shoes that can elevate your outfit. Abalos’s favorite platform shoe is the Converse Sneaker Platform, while on the other hand, senior Sara Javage likes Steve Madden’s Carly Black Leather Heel. “I wouldn’t say they are day-to-day basis shoes because sometimes, they can be uncomfortable…but sometimes they can make an outfit look 10 times better,” says Javage.
Platform shoes have re-emerged for a reason. From sneakers to heels, platform shoes may be the way to take your outfit to the next level. If you think you may like platform shoes and you haven’t purchased them, now is the perfect time to add a new pair of shoes to your wardrobe. Which platform shoes are your favorite? And do you think this trend will last?
