Walking in, my expectations were high after all I had heard about this movie, and walking out, I came out in tears with how amazing “Barbie” really was. It starts where we meet Margot Robbie’s Barbie, the “perfect” role model for women of all ages. She and many other Barbies live in a Barbie Land, a world where women are the people who run everything that happens, while Kens, which are just men, are there to have fun.
Slowly, the main character, Robbie’s Barbie, starts to lose her perfection and every one of the Barbies become concerned. She is told to leave Barbie Land and go to the real world to fix her flaws. Accompanied by a Ken that ended up sneaking with her, played by Ryan Gosling, Barbie slowly finds out how the real world is nothing like Barbie Land. Sexism and inequality fills the real world; Barbie is put down constantly by everyone around her, and Ken is treated with respect.
Barbie finds out how she hasn’t made an impact on any women in the real world, and Ken brings the ideas of patriarchy from the real world to Barbie Land, causing havoc. She manages to handle both situations as she takes audiences through an emotional journey.
I thought this movie was beautiful. It captures the struggles women go through, making it an eye-opening experience. The film shows the misogyny that women are put through in everyday life and how casually they’re disrespected, demonstrating how unfair the world is towards women. The movie didn’t hesitate to make the patriarchy the “villain” of this movie, making it a film that sticks true to its motives.
They make the point very clear that women shouldn’t be treated any differently from men and that they are strong and powerful. I left the movie theater with tears streaming from my eyes. They portrayed and captured emotions well with the acting and an excellent soundtrack. I was overwhelmed with sadness as the movie came to an end.
I came out of this movie with my eyes opened to how terribly true this movie depicts day to day life, and I came home telling my mom that I appreciated her. I would highly recommend this movie to all and any. It was a beautiful film, and I believe everyone must watch the “Barbie” movie.
