PinkPantheress is a singer from England who has gained popularity in recent years.
Her singles “Pain” and “Break It Off” went viral mainly because of TikTok. She would later release her first and only album out so far, “To Hell with It,” on Oct. 15, 2021. The majority of the album was made from garage beats, which all come together perfectly on “To Hell with It.”
The first song, “Pain,” has a very soft beat that goes amazing with the lyrics. PinkPantheress talks about her experience with an old lover and how they didn’t work out despite her wanting the relationship to last. She also said that the beat was sampled from “Flowers” by Sweet Female Attitude.
“I Must Apologise,” is the second song and follows the same narrative as the first. PinkPantheress sings about how her ex-lover was paranoid, which wasn’t helped by her lying habits. She wants to make things right and say her apologies to her lover and to gain their trust once again. This song borrows from “Gypsy Woman” by Crystal Waters in its melody.
“Last Valentines” is personally my favorite song on this album, as the lyrics and beat perfectly combine to make this song. In the song, PinkPantheress once again sings about a breakup, saying how it left her feeling gloomy.
“Passion” is the fourth song and is once again an amazing track. She sings about loneliness and its effects on her. This song was also teased on TikTok before the full release.
“Just for Me” talks about PinkPantheress’s obsession with a crush and how badly she wishes for them to be hers.
“Noticed I Cried” is the sixth song and has an incredible beat attached to it. The lyrics follow a different narrative because her past relationship no longer brings her somber feelings and rather feels like a burden.
“Reason” is another melancholy song about her feelings towards herself and her ex. She talks about a list she made for her life with the first being that she likes this person, and the second being that she’s never felt love.
“All My Friends Know” has PinkPantheress vocalizing how she wonders if her ex ever loved her. She says how her mother still thinks they are in love because of PinkPantheress’s fondness for this mysterious character. It also reflects on how her friends all know that, despite her love for the person, this person never loved her the same.
“Nineteen” is the second to last track on “To Hell with It.” PinkPantheress talks about how she wasn’t able to progress like everyone, even though she is now 19.
The final song, “Break It Off,” is one of PinkPantheress’s most famous tracks. Sampling “Circles” by Adam F, the beat and lyrics once again perfectly align with one another. The lyrics verbalize how she wishes her crush would simply tell her the words “I like you” instead of saying things to hurt her.
Critics also appreciated this album, with Metacritic rating it a 86/100 and PitchFork rating it a 7.3/10.
Personally, I would give “To Hell with It” a 91/100. I loved the beautiful rhythms and lyrics all the songs had. Along with this, the storytelling was incredible, as each song had great meaning. I would very highly recommend this album to those who want to get acquainted with PinkPantheress’s music, especially because she is releasing a new album on Nov. 10, 2023.
