On April 22 of every year, we celebrate Earth Day. It is a holiday to commemorate protecting our planet and to show that we care about what happens to our surrounding environment.
While it’s not typically the first holiday to pop in people’s minds, this celebration dates back to 1970. For years, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin had struggled to get fellow colleagues and politicians to raise awareness about the Earth and instead turned to the people to put together this holiday.
On the first Earth Day, it was estimated that about 20 million people from across the country attended events at school and community sites to raise awareness.
Now, over 50 years later, it is estimated that there are more than one billion participants from all around the world that partake in this day to celebrate the environment and to show love and care for our planet.
There are many different ways people celebrate, but most commonly, people tend to plant trees or take part in community clean ups; there are all sorts of ways you can celebrate.
How did you celebrate this Earth Day? Whether you went on a walk and picked up some trash, or even biked to work on Earth Day, make sure you continue to take part in this worldwide effort for a greener and more sustainable way of living.
