Aug. 12 marked the start of the 2024-2025 school year for Canyon students. With backpacks and new IDs in hand, hundreds of students piled in through the front and parking lot gates to get to their new classes. Many students had mixed emotions. Some were stressed about their schedules, others were worried about the new atmosphere, but the majority of these scholars were excited to see what the new year had in store for them.
Daniela Amador, a junior here at Canyon, stated, “I’m excited for my new classes and having classes with my friends. I am also a little stressed and upset about the workload that is going to come, and I hope I don’t feel crushed by the work. I also hope to not burn out.”
When Nicholas Puerto, a senior, was asked about his feelings for the upcoming school year, he responded with: “I’m not too indifferent. I mean, it is exciting. I am just excited to leave school.”
While these interviews do not encompass the feelings of all students, they give a small window of understanding as to how students think. Often, students are scared of the new year because of the loads of work that will eventually befall them, but it is important to stay aware of deadlines. Pushing assignments to the day before they are due adds extra stress, especially at the beginning of the year.
The start of the new year should be smooth as long as students are aware of two things: know that the peers around them are likely feeling just as stressed as they are and… don’t procrastinate!
