On July 29, 2001, the movie “The Princess Diaries,” directed by Garry Marshall, was released. The story takes place in San Francisco with a single mother, Helen Thermopolis, who is raising her daughter Mia.
One day, Mia’s grandmother, Clarisee Renaldi, requested for her to stop by her house so she can share some news. Clarisse shares the fact that Mia’s dad, Philippe Renaldo, was the Prince of Genovia, making Mia a Princess. Mia was freaked out about this news, and it takes her some time to really think about if she wants to go through with becoming a Princess.
On August 7, 2004, “The Princess Diaries 2” made its debut. As Mia is now 21 years old, she is still coming to terms with being a princess. Mia graduates from Princeton and moves back to Genovia.
Once she returns, her grandmother springs it on her that she will not be able to become queen unless she is married within 30 days. She then has to find a man that is suitable enough for her and for the role as king. If she does not find a man within that time period, she has to forfeit her right of queen and give the crown to Nicholas Dervereaux.
In October of 2024 it was announced by Anne Hathaway, who plays Mia Thermopolis in the first two movies, that there will officially be a third movie.
This was a highly anticipated announcement because “in November of 2022, the Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Aadrita Mukerji is penning a script for a third ‘Princess Diaries’ for Disney. The film is not a reboot, rather a continuation of the series.” It was also recently confirmed that Flora Greeson is writing the script for “Princess Diaries 3.”
Disney hopes to start production in 2025, and as of right now, we don’t know when the movie will be released.
