Have you ever thought about making films? Do you enjoy expressing yourself through video and being creative? If you do, Canyon Film Club might be the perfect club for you!
Held every other Wednesday at lunch in Mr. Jellings’ room (E-3), Canyon Film Club is a place where students can learn about the art of filmmaking and be a part of a supportive community.
Do not be shied away by the name—you do not need to have any prior filming or production experience to join. Having just started earlier this school year, Film Club is currently laying out the foundation on how to make creative films and teaching members the basics of filmmaking.
The club was founded by Presidents Amelia Sivaborvorn and Josh Ighodaro, who are both juniors. They each love the art of filmmaking and expression through video and decided to use their passion to start a club where students can do the same.
I got the opportunity to interview the club’s officers, and Sivaborvorn explained her meaning behind starting the club: “I think film is one of the most beautiful methods of storytelling, and we wanted to give others the opportunity to indulge in that experience.”
Ighodaro added to this sentiment: “We thought that opening up film as a medium for creativity would allow so many important stories to be told and reach a wide audience, creating a lasting impact [on] not only Canyon but the community around us.”
Vice President and junior Madelyn Martinez perfectly explained who the Film Club is meant for: “Film Club is meant for students who profoundly appreciate cinematography or who simply desire a space to cultivate their creativity in a fun-filled environment! Film Club gives you the freedom to express yourself while shooting short films and having fun with your friends!”
As the year goes on, the club hopes to expand its reach by entering the Hart District’s Annual Film Festival and submitting the club members’ work. Along with this, club officers are currently discussing possible field trips and learning opportunities off-campus.
