Canyon Pet Pals is a club at Canyon High School founded last year by sophomore Lauren Healey and the club officers, Brooke Healey, Tali Lazar, and Fiona Hyland. The club wants to make a difference in our community by contributing to local animal shelters and projects. They aim to build a brighter fur-friendly future. Everyone is welcome to join and participate in the Pet Pals Club!
Lauren Healey said, “Me and my officers who helped me, wanted to create this club because we all loved and owned various animals. There were a few setbacks to get the club started but the events we’ve hosted have been thriving.”
As a member of Pet Pals, you can receive community service hours by volunteering at the shelter or donating items such as slightly used blankets, towels, or shirts. The club holds meetings to connect everyone and discuss new ideas and upcoming events. Mrs. Arnold is the club advisor, and they meet in her classroom in K-1. This club meets once or multiple times a month, depending on the events they are planning.
The club’s first event last year was collecting items for the Burbank Animal Shelter. The shirts were then used to make future dog toys.
Last April, the Pet Pals Club held an event to make cards for the Sierra Pacific Great Pyrenees Rescue. They also made thank you cards for the volunteers at the shelter, in hopes of showing a token of appreciation.
When asked about plans for the club, Healey explained, “I have many different events planned for this year including dog toy making, thank you cards for shelter volunteers, and hopefully collaborating with Ecos Chicos to learn the importance of animals in our ecosystem. I have more plans I need to put into action that will be announced soon.”
Healey is excited to continue growing the club and helping animals. She stated, “Pet Pals has been a creative outlet for me and is a space where my ideas become reality. Watching people enjoying the activities that were once only a simple idea I shared with my friends at lunch is gratifying and pushes me to do even more! The main goal of our club is to promote the well-being of animals in our community in any way we can.”
Participating in this club will give you community service hours, a cord for graduation, and the opportunity to help needy animals.
