Eco Chicos is a well-known environmental club at Canyon with over 150 students! The club is centered around the idea of volunteering and participating in local community-led activities and events.
The club is advised by Mr. Yong, who is the only AP Environmental Science teacher on campus and also teaches Biology. He states that the club “is a fun way to be outdoors and help our local community.”
The club meets once every month during lunch in G-107, which is Mr. Yong’s room. Eco Chicos is available for new sign-ups at any time throughout the year, and students only have to stop by Mr. Yong’s room for club information like the Google Classroom and Remind text code to join.
Events take place on Saturday mornings around once a month and vary from hikes and outdoor cleanups to local volunteering projects. Three events are held each semester. One of their most special events is held each November—their annual beach cleanup, where students pick up trash near the Santa Monica Pier. This was also the most recent event.
Joey Gray, a student and first-year Eco Chicos member, states that the club is a “great opportunity for volunteer hours” and loves that the events involve engaging, hands-on activities.
Along with being an active and positive club that provides an opportunity to help in the community and visit nature, Eco Chicos also provides graduation cords to active members of 2+ years. Out of the six events each year, students must attend a minimum of four events in order for the year to be counted.
Students wishing to join this club and get involved in its activities can look forward to the next get-together, which will be a hike at Placerita Trail after winter break in January.
