From March 3 to March 7, Canyon High School’s very own French Honor Society led their much anticipated French Week, and it did not disappoint! With preparations taking place weeks before the daily events, French students along with their teacher, Madame Moulden, arranged a fun week full of activities.
On Monday, students held a hysterical Jeopardy-inspired trivia. The two opposing teams consisted of our very own Black Student Union and members of French Honor Society who duked it out with their wits by answering multicultural questions. In a very heated battle, Black Student Union claimed the victory by a slim amount of points! The fight to win was fierce and super enjoyable to watch.
Tuesday was the day to say “Happy Mardi Gras!” On the morning of, French Honor Society members passed out glow sticks to students as they walked into school as a way to celebrate the holiday. In typical Mardi Gras fashion, the students held a multicultural float parade to celebrate Canyon students’ diverse cultures. Students from many cultural clubs created floats displaying who they are and paraded through the school while playing music and wearing cultural outfits.
Khanh Pham, a senior at Canyon and member of the parade representing Asian Student Union (ASU), stated, “As someone who isn’t a part of the French program but was a participant because of my involvement in cultural activities on campus, I really enjoyed the parade that French Honors Society put on. While it may not have captured the full extent of Canyon’s diversity, it did highlight some of the culture clubs and organizations that are heavily involved at school. I appreciated that French Honors Society took the time and effort to put this event on and am extremely grateful to have participated in such an amazing event.”
Thursday’s event consisted of a scavenger hunt that ASU and Spanish Plus participated in. The two clubs went from station to station in a heated race to answer questions, figure out new locations, and obtain their prize: a baguette! The students were fierce in their battle and were victorious in the end.
At the closing of the school week, the French Honor Society put out their last activities: mini games! The members put out French-themed games that everyone at Canyon could participate in. There was also tug-of-war on the grass steps! Many students participated in the fun activities for candy and other prizes.
French Honor Society member and senior at Canyon, Isis Fregoso, shared, “French is a diverse language that is spoken far beyond Europe. I believe that is why French Week was the closest our school has ever been in bringing multiple cultures together in one celebration. I only hope that this further builds a connection between students of all backgrounds to openly express themselves and realize the amazing diversity at our school.”
As French Week is over for this year, please participate in upcoming weeks in future years! The events create lasting memories for all involved and make Canyon students just that much more connected.
