After over a decade of speculation and a complicated production history full of cancellations and new teams being brought in, “A Minecraft Movie” has finally been released in theaters across the world. For years, people had been wondering if there ever would be a movie based on the popular video game, “Minecraft.” Now the question has become, is it any good?
The movie was released in theaters internationally on Apr. 4. Thousands of people have started recording parts of the movie that provoke various different reactions following already famous parts of the movie.
“A Minecraft Movie” has already gained popularity far before its release due to many moments in trailers that sparked “memes.” Steve, portrayed by Jack Black, has been the focus of many of these.
Some examples are “flint and steel,” “the nether,” “I… am Steve,” and most notably, “chicken jockey!” Many of the viewers scream out these lines when they come on during the movie, especially with “chicken jockey!” While many are having fun, there are also some people in these crowds who have been throwing trash and food all across the theaters, causing chaos for many theater employees.
The movie itself, however, is a rollercoaster of ups followed by very boring downs with a mix of fun and lovable characters, as well as some not-so-lovable characters.
My favorite part would have to be the character Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, portrayed by the famous fish man, Jason Mamoa. The character is a former professional video game player who now owns a vintage video game store. Garrett has a lot of very funny moments with the other characters, made even better by Mamoa’s over-the-top reactions or false sense of confidence.
One loud criticism of “A Minecraft Movie” has been the look and design of the movie compared to its source material. The movie has a realistic approach to the creatures and world of Minecraft, with many of them ending up in the uncanny valley; however, I think the realistic approach adds to the weird charm that the movie has.
While not perfect by any means, I think “A Minecraft Movie” does exactly what its creators had aimed for and provides a fun adventure through a strange world with Jack Black as a guide.
