Judea Skies, commonly known as “JuJu” Watkins, is a 19-year-old basketball player who plays for the women’s basketball team at the University of Southern California (USC). JuJu Watkins, who was recruited by the Trojans because of her incredible talent and ability to score, was certain to give them a good season.
However, everything changed on March 31 when Watkins challenged two of her defenders during the second round of March Madness against Mississippi State. Her right knee failed, causing her to tear her ACL. Many fans were surprised by this injury because it appeared that Watkins was on a roll, and suddenly her season was coming to an end. She had to be carried off of the court and taken to a doctor immediately.
The Trojans were devastated that one of their best players was unable to play. The team had only advanced to the March Madness third round before losing to the UConn Huskies. Watkins' injury was still on the back of the players’ and coaches’ minds, and their worries began to show on the court.
Shortly after, Watkins posted on social media, saying, “Thank you for all the incredible love and support.” It had seemed as if the whole world was showing love to JuJu Watkins, including celebrities such as Snoop Dog, Kevin Hart, Angel Reese, Magic Johnson, and many more. For such a phenomenal player, she deserved all the love she got.
But of course, despite Watkins’ injury, there are also some positives. A few days later, Watkins was presented with the AP player of the year award. This was the first time in USC history that a Trojan player received this recognition.
With just her sophomore year of college, Watkins was already accomplishing many things. Many hope for a speedy recovery, and when she does recover, Watkins will be able to break more records.
