This year, Teacher Appreciation Week is taking place from May 5 to May 9. In honor of this, I sent out a survey for students to complete in order to show our Canyon pride and gratitude.
Having a supportive and reliable staff is part of creating a welcoming campus, and Canyon has an amazing faculty who have impacted the lives of students in immeasurable ways.
The first question I asked in the survey is who is one teacher who has had a positive impact on you. Here are just a few of the responses I received.
“Mr. Jellings has been an amazing mentor, helping me improve my skills to hopefully pursue news and media production as a career!” said Kayleigh Behar.
Santiago Guevara is grateful for Dr. Goodwin. Guevara explained, “She has increased my confidence and made the classroom a safe and fun environment.”
Eliana Lemus shouted out Mr. Subbaro: “He has pushed, motivated me, and given me helpful advice not just in the subject he teaches but about life in general. He’s such a caring teacher who always checks up on his students to make sure that they are not only okay, but if they are happy. He has helped me with my mental help even if he hasn’t noticed. My freshman year was held up by him. I probably don’t show it much but Mr. Sub has actually made a huge impact on my life and schooling. I will for sure be visiting him even when I don’t have his class any longer.”
An anonymous student is thankful for Ms. Hargrave, stating, “She believes in each and every one of her students. Her positive attitude makes me have a positive attitude.”
While there’s no shortage of endearing messages of appreciation towards teachers, not all appreciation is vocalized. The acts of kindness that teachers and other staff members on campus give to the students aren’t always lavish. Sometimes even the silent acts are the ones that make the greatest impact, from the janitors that bring a sense of pride for our well-maintained campus to the lunch ladies who provide comfort through warm meals at brunch and lunch. According to Wright Reyli, “they always say hi and ask how my day was.”
Here are some of the messages towards our non-teacher staff on campus:
Prudence Flood wanted to thank Mr. Franco, and said that he “has been one of the best, down to earth, most respectable teachers I’ve had, even as a long-term sub.”
Someone that Reem Sukkar is grateful for is Mr. Robert. Sukkar stated, “I appreciate Robert’s support as new students. He helped us feel more comfortable and confident, always helping us whenever we needed him.”
To Ms. Foderaro, “She is always checking in on the students at Canyon and is involved in the school activities and workshops.”
Caddy Payne said that campus supervisor Kathy “is such a sweet soul. I’m so grateful that she’s a supervisor on our campus because, whenever I see her, she just puts a smile on my face. Thanks for being such a ray of sunshine, Kathy.”
The number of Canyon staff mentioned hardly surmounts the gratitude us students have for them. Even when Teacher Appreciation Week ends, remember to express gratitude to those who matter because a few words can have a lasting impact!
