As summer comes to an end, the transition into cozy autumn days soon begins. During fall, there are many new things to celebrate each month, like Halloween in October, Thanksgiving in November, and Hispanic Heritage Month in September.
Starting on Sept. 15 and going until Oct. 15, the nation unites to celebrate the Hispanic and Latino community. It may be confusing as to why this celebration begins later in the month rather than in the beginning; however, the dates are actually very important.
The celebration of this Heritage Month is divided between two separate months because countries like Belize, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua and Honduras all celebrate their independence over the course of this period of time.
Hispanics have been a part of the United States since the beginning, going as far back as the American Revolution. As the National Museum of the American Latino’s website shows, Latino culture is rooted in a deep history, and it is still prominent today. Their influence can be seen throughout the nation's music, art, food, and sports.
Whether you are a member of the Hispanic and Latino community looking to have a deeper appreciation for your own culture or are someone who is in search of an opportunity to explore another culture’s heritage, there are multiple events that are dedicated to just that! Take a look at the City of Los Angeles Calendar and find the time and place that is best suited for you. The Los Angeles community is diving into Latino literature, arts, and cooking. There is something for everyone!
Looking for something closer to you? Canyon High School’s Spanish + Club is preparing to celebrate this year's Heritage Month.
After interviewing Mrs. Guzman, one of the advisors of Spanish +, I learned what upcoming things they have planned. Club members will be drawing pictures and writing descriptions on important figures in Latin America. The range is wide and includes culture icons such as movie star Cantinflas and legendary artist Frida Kahlo. You will be able to see their drawings around campus, and the library window will also be decorated to honor Hispanic Heritage Month.
This month, watch as your community and your school takes the opportunity to commemorate the beauty of Latin American culture!
