The start of school means new memories for all students, whether it’s their first year of high school or their last. Our ASB (Associated Student Body) hosts events that give students opportunities to make unforgettable high school memories, and the first major event of the year was Homecoming Week. This week featured an exciting four days filled with dress-up days and events to promote the rally, a wild football game, and the main focus, the Homecoming Dance.
Canyon High School’s 2025 primary Homecoming celebrations took place on Friday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 6. This year’s theme was “Rodeo Hoco,” with the exception of a superhero theme for the Homecoming Rally.
Students of all grade levels gathered in the fully decorated gym, dressed in superhero outfits based on their grade level. During the rally, multiple games were hosted by ASB; the most notable one was “Hungry Heroes,” where selected athletes in fall sports slid around on carts and collected superhero toys.
During every rally game, the crowd was exhilarated and restlessly awaited the end results. Similar to past years, the seniors were the liveliest out of all of the grade levels. They were jumping, shouting, and fully invested! There was never a dull moment in the best way possible.
Karen Cardona, a freshman at Canyon, explained how, “The entire crowd was energetic, excited, and restlessly anticipating to see who would win.”
In between games and announcements, JV Cheer, Varsity Cheer, Drumline, and Varsity Dance stole the show with their high-intensity performances.
Along with our amazing performing arts team, Canyon’s fall sports were also given a moment to shine! Flag Football, Football, Tennis, Golf, Cross Country, and Girls Volleyball were all introduced, hyping up the crowd as they made their grand entrance during the rally.
Following fall sports was the introduction of each grade level’s homecoming court. Every member of the homecoming court was nominated by their grade level. Each court member ran out in silly outfits, showed off their fun handshakes, and had high energy.
Senior Josh Ighodaro explained that “It’s so fun just thinking about how out of our 400-plus class size, people voted for me!”
After the rally, the next celebration was the Homecoming Parade and the football game against John F. Kennedy High School that followed directly after.
All the homecoming court members got dressed up and rode in convertibles, parading around in front of the student body. The student section did not disappoint with their loud cheers and cowboy-themed outfits.
The game that followed was a hard fight, with Canyon unfortunately losing 21-29; however, our dedicated football team is more than prepared to put up an even stronger fight at our next game.
Finally, the long-awaited Homecoming Rodeo arrived late Saturday evening. The whole area by the football field was decorated with hay bales, western decor, and colorful lights. There was not one thing unaccounted for. Not only was the decor spectacular, but so were the carnival games, photobooth, and the DJ!
Sophomore Russie Hughes mentioned how it was fun to hang out with his friends: “Nobody was forced to dance, and that was a plus. You could dance, play games, or just find a spot to relax and enjoy the music.”
Near the end of the night, the senior homecoming royalty were crowned, those two being Breezy Mulan and Josh Ighodaro.
“Being homecoming royalty with my fellow theater friend was so fun, and I hope the next two homecoming royalties are theatre kids as well!” Mulan exclaimed.
This year’s Homecoming festivities will be cherished by many for years to come. We hope to see you at Homecoming next year, Cowboys, along with other events throughout the year!
