Looking for an academic club to join here at Canyon? Then consider the California Scholarship Federation (CSF), an honors organization with a chapter here at Canyon! Joining allows California’s best and brightest students to come together in an environment that is tailored to helping middle and high schoolers get involved with their community, while also encouraging good grades.
CSF works to acknowledge and praise academic excellence in high schools across the state, all while being a nonprofit organization!
Being a part of this club requires the completion of a minimum of 10 hours of volunteer work. The first five hours must be done in CSF, meaning that individuals help with projects that are put together by the organization. After that, where you choose to spend the remaining hours is totally up to you!
Volunteer ideas such as assisting in your church, signing up to work at events in your locale, and aiding small businesses – with their permission, of course – are all acceptable options. Not only do you learn how to be responsible and spend time wisely, but you also learn what it means to give back to your community!
Another benefit that this club has to offer is the scholarship opportunities! The few selected with the highest grades and the most potential can be offered a grant or scholarship. Lone Star, Highest Honors Student, and Battle Born Scholarship are just a few that this organization offers, and they can be crucial in getting the best education possible. If you are interested in these vital financial opportunities, after joining the club, visit the directory on the official website to view the full list of scholarships provided!
Additionally, at graduation, Sealbearers, who are members who have completed two full years, finished out the four semesters, and fulfilled at least 10 hours of CSF-sanctioned community service, receive a grad pack! This package includes a cord, a medal, a membership card, a certificate, a pin, and a state honor seal that goes on the actual diploma itself. Students only have to pay $20 out of the total cost!
However, there are requirements and applications that are necessary to be met and completed in order to join. To apply, get an application from our CSF advisor, Dr. Vicki Goodwin, and fill out a form that shows your grades from the previous semester. The grades have a point system, where an A is three points and a B is one point (anything lower will not be accepted). In total, these numbers must add up to at least 10 points. A new application has to be submitted each semester to remain a member!
When interviewing Dr. Goodwin about the benefits of student involvement, she explained, “It looks good on college applications since it is nationally recognized as the state honor society.” Clearly, there are many upsides to participating in this club here at Canyon. CSF is always welcoming new members, so stop by Dr. Goodwin’s room, AA-3, if you have any questions!
