  • The beautiful waves on the shores of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Three tourists from America take a break from online school to experience the jaw-dropping waves.

  • Doing online schoolwork while taking in the view of the island pool at the Hard Rock Hotel. The empty pool shows how few people are able to travel at this time during the pandemic.

While COVID-19 has cancelled millions of summer trips for many worldwide, some people are starting to experience the thrill of traveling again. Flying to another country to get a different view right now is quite an unforgettable experience. I was fortunate enough to travel to the Dominican Republic with my family while enjoying the beautiful beaches and taking a break from everyday stresses.

Although life in the United States is very different from life in the Dominican Republic, there are a lot of surprising similarities during this pandemic. Masks are mandatory everywhere you go and everyone keeps their social distance as much as possible.

Tourists from all around the world come to see the most breathtaking turquoise water you will ever see. I know that this time is very stressful for many, but I guarantee you that everyone else in the world is going through the same challenges and stresses as you. In the Dominican Republic, however, many people are stress-free and living their lives to the fullest; it is like a dream.

In a small town, the local kids come out to say hello, and they look like the happiest people on the planet. One little boy in particular is seen giving flowers to the tourists, while local tour guides show the tourists how to make fresh ground coffee and chocolate.

Online school is very challenging due to Wi-Fi connections and time changes, but the view of the ocean while studying for a chemistry test can give anyone the motivation they need. That is one of the bonuses of doing school remotely; you can do it from anywhere if you have Wi-Fi.

Times are extremely different in 2020, but if you can find something that makes you happy and minimizes your stress level it can be extremely significant. Not everyone can travel to the Dominican Republic in the middle of October, but even taking a small road trip with your family is something many students need at this time. Spending time away from home and away from your phone and computer screen for even a day can make a world of difference. Next time you talk to your parents about grades, let them know that you need a break away from home and want to take a trip together as a family.
