On Sept. 23, 2019, the companies QCODE and Wood Elf came out with the first episode of a podcast called “The Edge of Sleep,” that can be found on Apple podcasts or Spotify. The podcast is a post-apocalyptic adventure that follows a group of survivors struggling to stay alive during a mysterious epidemic which causes the whole world to die in their sleep. The group is made up of four people: a veteran named Matteo, a nurse named Linda, a girl named Katie, and a nighttime security guard named Dave.
The first two episodes of the podcast follow the survivors the day before the disaster struck. Dave gets off work and heads to a party that his ex-girlfriend, Katie, is supposed to be at. He wants to talk to her, but as soon as he gets there, he realizes that the party is over and the host of the party is dead. Meanwhile at the hospital, Linda and the rest of the staff are dealing with multiple code blue alerts that are spreading across the building.
As the story continues, Matteo and Katie meet up with Dave and Linda at the hospital where they soon come to the realization that everyone in the world has died due to a mysterious event that kills people in their dreams. Dave then decides to go into a microsleep in order to find out what happens in those dreams, where he meets a mysterious man that tells him to go to an island called Moresby.
As the group gets ready to arrive at Moresby, they soon realize that they are not alone, as those who have died come back as sleepwalking zombies that attempt to stop them. The group arrives at the airport and gets on a plane to fly to the island. Sadly, Matteo and Katie are lost along the way.
Dave and Linda make it to Moresby where they meet the mysterious man that appeared in Dave’s dream. He then takes them to his tribe where they will be protected from the mysterious darkness.
The story so far contains many twists and turns, graphic scenes, and moments where you may want to cry. It also peers into Dave’s struggles with sleep terrors throughout his life and how it affects his relationships.
There is news of a season two and a TV series that are currently in the works as of writing this, so if you want to start diving into this suspenseful story, then now is the time! Also, if you had already listened to the first season, then I recommend getting the novel adaptation of this podcast where it retells the story with a slightly different storyline and adds points of view from different survivors around the world. The novel can be found in Barnes and Noble or Amazon. It is such a good story, I highly recommend giving it a read and listen. Just remember to stay awake.
