Our Canyon Cross Country season has finally started, and the first league race was held on Sept. 14, 2024. The 3-mile race was held at the College of the Canyons (COC). The day started bright and early, as the team had to be there at 6:45 a.m.
The first race of the day was FS Boys at 8:00 a.m. The race was led by Chase Hutchison, 11th place, and Irvin Juarez, 12th place.
The next race was FS Girls at 8:30 a.m. led by Savannah Rodriguez, fourth place, and Johnnie Burger, sixth place.
This was followed by Varsity Boys at 9:05 a.m. led by Owen Souther, second place, and Beto Osorio, fifth place.
Next was Varsity Girls at 9:35 a.m. Five of our girls placed in the top 11. This race was led by Abby Racancoj Lopez in second place, Ashley Kpachavi in fifth place, Jazlene Herreres in seventh place, Jassmine Enamorado in eighth place, and Jocelyn Cruz in 11th place.
The following races were the JV Boys and JV Girls. JV Boys were led by Cole Cusack, who scored eighth place, and Gio Campbell, who scored 12th place.
JV Girls were led by Destiny Yoc, first place, and Julianna Calleros, fourth place!
The girls placed first overall with 33 points, beating Hart and Saugus High School! The boys placed third overall with 66 points, beating Saugus as well. Both the boys and girls did an outstanding job. Congratulations to everyone who raced!
I asked a couple of the girls about things that they thought they could have improved on. “Something I could definitely improve on is my kick and trying to pass girls the last 100m,” stated Julianna Calleros.
The next question asked was about what makes a team stronger and work better together. Savannah Rodriguez said, “To me, I think the main thing is giving each other respect and motivation. Having respect for everyone on the team shows your teammates that you are committed to this sport and can work well with each other.”
Everyone on the team had an amazing race and will continue to push themselves and reach for their goals. Good job, Canyon Cross Country! Our community can’t wait to see what the future races have in store for our team.
