For the first time in Canyon High School history, our very own Varsity Boys Basketball team clinched the win to become CIF champions!
The CIF-SS Division 2A championship game was played against St. Bonaventure Catholic High School at Azusa Pacific University on Friday, Feb. 28. It was a close match, and onlookers were excited to see who would take home the prestigious title that only one in 32 teams across Southern California gets to have each year.
Our basketball team played a great game. As the game drew to a close, Isaac Yuhico passed the ball to Noah Madrigal. Madrigal successfully shot a three-pointer, clutching a dramatic triple-overtime victory and ending the game with a score of 89-86.
In celebration of their historic season, the Boys Basketball team and coaches decided to hold a special rally during brunch at school on March 4. Students packed together around the outdoor stage to see a performance by our Cheer team, the Boys Basketball coach said some words of gratitude, and, most importantly, our very own Mr. Gatzas got his head shaved!
“I am so happy for them and all their insane work,” Mr. Gatzas commented. “I believe Monfared and that team have worked so incredibly hard to be as good as possible at this sport that I have come to love over the last few months.”
With loud music playing, and everyone squeezing in to get photos, it took more than a few people to get Mr. Gatzas cleaned up and bald! And while many will see it as just a silly act, Mr. Gatzas, our varsity players, and the coaches know that this feat meant more than just a gag. They know that it will forever signify just how monumental this championship title is and how lasting the win will be for our school.
Go Cowboys!!
