The Kentucky Derby, a well-known American tradition that has been going on since 1874, came back again this year. This exciting horse race was held on Saturday, May 3 at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Everyone was excited to attend and see this year's fashion and horse race!
According to the official organization, the “Kentucky Derby is just one 2-minute race but brings people worldwide for a week of races, excitement, spectacle, and suspense, all leading up to the first Saturday in May.”
Many horses try to join the race, but they must meet certain requirements. These include needing to be at least a 3-year-old Thoroughbred and having high winning points in their series in order to win a spot at the derby.
This year’s racers are all talented. With racers coming from all over, it was an interesting race. However, the race is not the only thing that main people wait for when derby season comes up. The fashion statements people wear to these events is another reason to attend the event.
It is tradition for many of the women to come to these events wearing outstanding hats, some of which are bigger than their bodies, just to stand out. While walking around, people will be in their best dresses with many colors that pop and other fancy outfits. The main purpose is to show that this event was ideally for the upper-class, and for many to come out and show their best wear. This gives others another thing to look out for than just the race.
Along with the race and outfits, the Kentucky Derby is known for having many famous people come to not only watch the race but also place high betting prices on the horses. Many people will go far enough to bet millions on the horses, ensuring a positive outcome. With this year’s horses all being well-raced, it was hard to tell who would win, but in the end, Sovereignty came out with the lead, winning the 151st Kentucky Derby.
As the Derby season comes to an end, many are already getting ready for next year's derby and hope to countice on this lifelong tradition.
