Last Saturday on Oct. 2, Canyon Girls Varsity Basketball went up against the 16th ranked team in the state; Sierra Canyon! Keep in mind that the CHS girl’s team is placed 552 in the state. While the girls battled hard against a great team, unfortunately they lost 60-21.

Sierra Canyon is led by Juju Watkins, the number 1 girls basketball player in the nation for the class of 2023. Watkins is a 2021 U16 FIBA gold medalist and was also named the M.V.P.!

In the first half of the game, Canyon was balling out and even had a lead! They were up 9-7 but after that, Sierra Canyon took over. Junior, Jade Sims, tried to pick up the slack by becoming the only scorer in the second half. Junior guard, Aaliyah Garcia, handled the ball very well and got past multiple long defenders. Sadly, Canyon wasn’t able to keep up but they still battled to the end.

When asked about what the team could’ve done better, Sims said “Our team could’ve understood how to play defense the right way instead of getting lost for no reason.” Canyon’s team had nothing to lose and all to gain. This experience will only help prepare them for their upcoming season.

The Girls Varsity Basketball Team has been playing hard in the off-season as they have had many wins and few losses. They are looking forward to crossing over the competition this year! Come support your Canyon Girls Varsity Basketball Team for their first league game at home on Nov. 30!
