2023 Oscars

The Oscars have been held every year since 1929, and they still continue to be held to this day. Each year, a different person hosts this ceremony, and this year, it was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at the Dolby Theater located in Hollywood.

The academy board decides “which individuals will receive invitations.” This year, Vanessa Hudgens, Lilly Singh, Dwayne Johnson, Michael B. Jordan, and thousands of other people were invited to attend this ceremony.

The board also decides on who the nominees and winners are for the different categories. For the leading role, the winner was Brendan Fraser, an actor who played in the movie, “The Whale.”

Perhaps the most prestigious award is the Best Picture award. This year’s nominees were: “Avatar: The Way Of Water,” “Elvis,” “Women Talking,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Triangle Of Sadness,” “Tar,” “The Fabelmans,” “The Banshees Of Inisherin,” “All Quiet On The Western Front,” and the winner: “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

Another category is the Animated Feature Film. This year, the nominees were “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish,” “Turning Red,” “The Sea Beast,” and others. Ultimately, the winner was “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”

This was del Toro’s “first win in the Animated Feature category,” and his “third Oscar win.” When he went up on stage, del Toro gave a speech saying, “Animation is not a genre, and animation is ready to be taken to the next step. We are all ready for it.”

The Oscars also honors films made outside of the United States with their International Feature Film award. The nominees for 2023 were: “Argentina, 1985”, “Close” (Belgium), “Eo” (Poland), “The Quiet Girl” (Ireland), with the winner being “All Quiet On The Western Front” (Germany).

In addition to awarding actors and the creators of the films, the Oscars awards other people who help behind the scenes. For the Costume Design award, the nominees were “Babylon,” “Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris,” and the winner was “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

For Film Editing, the nominees were “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” with the winner being “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” This movie has been nominated 11 times and has won 7 Oscars, the film won the comedy award as best edited film. Paul Rogers said, “This is too much, wow, this is my second film y’all, this is crazy.” He also thanked his wife, family, and cast.

Although the awards focus on film, they also recognize music with their Music (Original Song) award. This year’s nominees: included “Applause” from “Tell It Like A Woman,” “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “This Is A Life” from “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” and the winner, “Naatu Naatu” from “RRR.”

“Naatu Naatu” made history before when it won the Golden Globe. Many Instagram reels and dance trends were posted using this song. M.M. Keeravani started his speech by singing a bit of the song and thanking the academy and his team. He was very proud because it was the “first time an Indian film’s won in the category.”

This year the academy also celebrated their 95th Annual Academy Awards, meaning that this year was the 95th year that the Oscars was hosted. But, before I wrap it up, did you agree with the winners and nominees this year?
