Canyon High Drama performed “Little Shop of Horrors” on May 13, 14, and 15. The stars of the show were Brandon Davenport and Brooke Swan. They performed alongside actors Josh Ighodaro, Lexi Milak, and Gavin McGrath.
I was super excited to see this play. Upon first walking into the Performing Arts Center, they had snacks for sale, and as well as Audrey II cupcakes which were beautiful. When I entered the theater, I got a chance to sit in the front row and take it all in.
To start, the set looked amazing and captured the aesthetic of the plant shop, perfectly matching the movie. The actors that started the play came down from the side of the stage, catching the crowd by surprise. They came in singing the prologue (“Little Shop of Horrors”) and did an amazing job, hitting insane vocals.
Overall, the play never had a dull moment, and there was always a laugh. Davenport and Swan both had breathtaking performances. Davenport perfectly showcased the awkward and nerdy essence of Seymour Krelborn. Swan had an outstanding performance, and captured Audrey's character fantastically.
Furthermore, Davenport and Swan had amazing chemistry on stage, and had everyone gasping during their kissing scenes. They sang perfectly together, and harmonized wonderfully. They were perfect throughout the whole play and kept the crowd's eyes glued to them.
McGrath also portrayed his character perfectly. He had the crowd laughing when he and Davenport performed “Mushnik and Son.”
Midway through the play, Josh Ighodaro made an appearance and had the crowd roaring with laughter. He flawlessly played a dentist named Orin Scrivello and went all out with his character. He also interacted with the audience! They even had an easter egg in the play that made a reference to their last play, “Sweeney Todd.” As Ighodaro was holding up a dentist tool, the lights went red, and the theme of “Sweeney Todd” started playing. This was a good laugh for the audience who had gone to the previous play.
Overall, this play was phenomenal and was an amazing choice for the seniors’ last play. It will definitely be sad to watch the seniors go, but they have many more amazing actors that will definitely make a name for themselves.
