I was randomly looking for a video to watch out of boredom one day, and that’s when I came across an intriguing music video. I listened to the song and was amazed that I hadn’t heard about the duo group The Grapes and their album “trivial.”
The first song on the track list, “Flying Jacket,” pulled me in from the start with the enticing title and beautiful cinematography in the music video. The title itself is about a clothing piece, but the song sends a message about lasting dreams and continuous support. The colors and storytelling in the video played a vital role in showing the playful spirit everyone had. The catchy guitar and drum instrumental combined with the nostalgic film style creates an uplifting feeling. While it is a song that has a mix of Korean and English, don’t let language discourage you from listening to this song. It will have a motivational freedom that will make you dance in your room.
“Summertime” is a song about love that is chaotic but innocent. The summer is when people tend to explore and experience the world in a carefree manner. That carefree spirit of an adolescent exploring love in summer is expressed wonderfully through the lyrics and beat. A line that shows the essence of the song is: “I’d rather be the one who I always wanted to be.” The simplicity reflects the carefree nature of youth and the warm peace that people yearn for under the sun.
“Wishing You the Best” differs from the typical joyful melody, instead bringing a sense of melancholy. It feels like a shift in nature from innocent love into the new understanding of heartbreak and regret. The music has a slower tempo, which reflects the heart and the internal struggles.
“Lights Out” picks back up the speed and an amazing beat encapsulating the clumsy experience of being in love and not knowing if your feelings are mutual. It expresses that overwhelming feeling of hope over the sheer possibility that something could happen if you keep trying.
The last song on the album is “Doesn’t Feel the Same.” From the title alone, you can expect a heartsick song. The soft singing and instrumental goes into the confusion that comes with moving further in life as one reminisces over the past, possibly opening the interpretation of speaking to a past lover. In life after loving, some things remain constant while others—even if it feels like they should remain the same—change beyond recognition.
The album captures feelings that may seem trivial but will leave a lasting impression on what love is and how to live. If you enjoy indie-rock music, I suggest you give this short album a listen!
