Canyon High School’s Jazz Band and Choir brought timeless rock songs to life on stage at their “Rock The Stage” concert Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025. The event included an electrifying setlist with classics like “Heartbreak Hotel” by Elvis and “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne, performers dressed in their most iconic grunge outfits, a bake sale during intermission, and so much more!
Audience members had the opportunity to attend either the 2 p.m. matinee or 6:30 p.m. evening showing (or both!) on Saturday, and each concert included slightly different performances. The matinee, for instance, featured a solo recital of “Since U Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson, performed by Lucia Velasquez, while the evening concert included an intense rendition of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” by The Rolling Stones, performed by our Jazz Band.
Even with slightly different setlists, each concert delivered the same spirit of passion and talent, ensuring that no matter which show viewers attended, they experienced a memorable celebration of music!
The solo acts, in particular, absolutely blew fans away. Notable recitals included “Creep” by Radiohead, performed by Paige Rogers, and “Decode” by Paramore, performed by Tiffany Stevens. Each solo gave the singers a moment to shine on their own, letting the audience see their individuality and stage presence outside of their groups.
The crowd went wild for these performances, along with the final act, which was “A Tribute to Queen” by Queen. All Choirs and our Jazz Band came together on stage to perform this unforgettable song and had attendees out of their seats by the end of it, clapping and cheering.
When asked what her favorite part of the concert was, Jazz Band member Elise Haupt answered, “I have to say Queen… Not just because it’s the finale, and it’s awesome, but I like playing on the vibraphone. When we get to the beat drop in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ there’s a lot of energy, and it’s really cool.”
Show Choir member Cindy Orozco detailed the spirit of the event as “it was like everyone was entranced; they were all engaged in our performances. You could tell that every person who was a part of the show was committed and did not hold back!”
Personally, I was blown away by the creativity and production of the event as a whole. From the choreography to the lighting, every detail felt intentional and perfectly placed, making the concert an unforgettable experience!
Tickets were free for Canyon students and staff, free for children under 18 at the matinee and $5 at the evening showing, and $10 for adults. There was a bake sale during intermission, as well, allowing the audience to take a break and enjoy some delicious treats before the second act of the show. All proceeds went back to our Canyon Music Department, enabling them to continue putting on these gorgeous events!
