After three months of rehearsals, Canyon Drama begins their incredible three show season with a ’90s rendition of William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night!”
“Twelfth Night” is about Viola and Sebastian, two twin siblings that wash up on the seashore of Illyria after a shipwreck. Viola disguises herself as a young man named “Cesario” in order to serve Duke Orsino. He sends the “young man” to convince Lady Olivia that she is in love with the Duke; however, quite the opposite happens when she falls in love with Cesario/Viola.
Sebastian also finds himself stranded, but he becomes friends with the sea captain, Antonio, and begins to live on the island of Illyria. Instead of living peacefully, multiple people begin confusing Sebastain and Viola (disguised as Cesario), and chaos quickly ensues.
I spoke with Art Miller, the director of the program, about what inspired his vision for “Twelfth Night. He said that, growing up as a kid in the ’90s, he would always sit down to watch the Friday evening lineup of TV shows. Miller explained, “Shows that inspired my vision for ‘Twelfth Night’ included ‘Full House,’ ‘Fresh Prince,’ ‘Friends,’ and a little bit of ‘Seinfeld’ mixed in.”
Josh Ighodaro, who plays Duke Orsino mentioned how, as tech week creeps forward, it has been an incredible experience to see everything come together, including props, costumes, lighting and all! Ighodaro also mentions that he is extremely privileged for this to be his last play with Canyon Drama; it will be unforgettable.
“Twelfth Night” will premiere Nov. 13-15 in the Canyon High School Performing Arts Center, at 7 p.m. each night! Thursday and Saturday will be principal cast, starring Breezy Mulan as Viola, and Brooke Swan as Oliva. Friday night is the understudy cast, in which Melody Ramirez will perform the role of Olivia.
Canyon Drama wants a Full House, so make sure to support them at a show—or all of them!
