Canyon High School’s halls have been positively abuzz about the baby chicks that were hatched in room G-228, Mr. Carothers’ math class. The first 13 chicks were hatched the night of April 23. They were quite the shock for students who expected a math test but instead stumbled upon adorable newborn chicks!
The next day, April 24, two more baby chicks decided to make their appearance during his fourth period. That makes a grand total of 15 new hatchlings!
Now you may be wondering, what do baby chicks have to do with math? Mr. Carothers thought it would be a fun way to get students involved in a hands-on experiment! He explained, “It was a novel way to learn content and connect with live nature…it is a cool biological/environmental twist to statistics.”
These chicks helped turn a typical, mundane lesson into an enticing and unforgettable moment as students aimed to see how many chicks hatched at school compared to how many hatched at home.
Even though I did not have the opportunity to join in on the experiment with the chicks, I was able to hold and see some of them hatch. After spending time with the chicks and seeing the joy that they brought to students, it made me realise that class/campus pets have the potential to be extremely beneficial to students! The chicks were an instant mood-boost for the whole class and quickly brought everyone together for one cause.
Furthermore, when asking Mr. Carothers for his opinion on the matter, he stated, “They are great for mental health, connecting with nature, being present with friends, and are overall a fun shared experience.” Clearly, these chicks were an eggcellent idea!
So, next time you hear about chick hatchings on campus, come check it out. You don't want to miss out on this rare opportunity!
