In recent weeks, tensions between Ukraine and Russia have been rising rapidly, and it is causing panic among citizens. This conflict regards Russia´s distaste for Ukraine´s move toward certain European institutions, notably NATO, a defense alliance in the West.

Russia is finding it crucial to prevent its neighboring country from joining this institution. Russia and Ukraine share many ties, but Russia is largely a country that stands alone, and doesn’t want its affairs at all involved with NATO.

The Ukrainian/Russian conflict is one that has been ongoing since 2014 and has taken many lives. It is because of this that the idea of Russia invading Ukraine is not seen as an empty threat; it certainly wouldn’t be an action that came out of left field.

While Russian officials have claimed that they have no plans for a Ukrainian invasion, plenty of Russian troops have been placed all around Ukraine. The US has urged its citizens that it is still unknown whether or not an invasion will take place, but most are not convinced.

If this invasion were to happen, it would be a disastrous event. According to Biden Administration officials, an invasion by Russia could kill up to 50,000 people and cause irreversible damage, both literally and figuratively. A refugee crisis in Europe is almost certain due to the fact that thousands upon thousands would be fleeing.

70 percent of the troops needed for a full invasion by Russia are already placed at the Ukrainian borders; if an attack is going to happen, it will take place soon.

While the question of whether or not this invasion will happen is still up in the air, the world is holding its breath. If the attack ensues, it will change the trajectory of the future for both countries.
