I love edit culture, and I don’t care if that sounds super Gen-Z or screenager of me to say! Edits of television shows and movies, or just any current obsession of mine, are genuinely one of the best things that come across my “For You” page.
Edits are compilations of video clips mashed together with a song playing in the background to create an epic sequence. Primarily, they are watched and posted on TikTok and Instagram.
When I come across an edit of a show or a movie I'm currently watching, my viewing experience is instantly elevated and becomes much more enjoyable.
Edits open your mind to different perspectives of a show or movie and allow you to enjoy whatever you’re watching in a deeper, more empathetic way. For instance, when I first watched Netflix’s original series, “Outer Banks,” I had a burning hatred for Rafe Cameron. However, after seeing certain edits that highlighted his trauma, I saw the difficult relationship he had with his father and how that caused him to do the things he did. I began to understand his character differently, which altered my viewing experience for the better, all because of these videos.
When you see the phrase “Let me hold your hands while you watch this,” you know the video is going to be phenomenal. I know it might sound crazy, but I love soul-crushing edits. Something about seeing an edit of an innocent character being forced into a life they never intended to live paired with a heartbreaking song that feels like it was written for them, makes me feel fulfilled—absolutely devastated, yes, but fulfilled nonetheless. Honestly, any heartbreaking edit of a misunderstood character that always seems to be going through something will never disappoint.
In complete contrast to my previous statement, I also love edits because of the hype and excitement that they bring. I have watched edits of upcoming movies and shows that were genuinely more exhilarating than the official trailer, particularly the great edits before Netflix’s hit show “Stranger Things” came out! Before it came out on Nov. 26, I was seeing edit after edit about the show, and I have never felt more anticipation.
I have watched that show since I was 7 years old, and nothing has made me more eager for a new season than watching montages of the characters' heroic battles against interdimensional monsters!
Honestly, a well-constructed edit of anything is really good! I have seen magnificent edits from music artists to mac and cheese; both of which were thoroughly enjoyable. I love watching edits of my favorite artists. It turns out I also love the super unserious edits of random things; even if they are silly, they are still very entertaining.
Many people would agree that edits are amazing and are a great way to bring attention to a certain topic. Not only are there hundreds of edit accounts that have an insane amount of likes and views, but companies are even hiring editors to promote themselves. For example, Lionsgate used TikTok editors to promote "Twilight."
Speaking of Lionsgate, popular actress Mckenna Grace, who plays Maysilee Donner in the upcoming Hunger Games movie produced by Lionsgate, has admitted to having a secret edit account for her favorite things. For instance, it has been revealed that she created edits of her co-star in “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” Josh Hutcherson, when he played his character Peeta Mellark in “The Hunger Games.”
Overall, nothing will beat the feeling of stumbling upon a marvelously crafted edit of a current obsession. So, thank you to the editing app CapCut, and thank you to all the editors who feed me on TikTok!
