  • The Eco-Chicos Environmental Club goes on a hike at Placerita Canyon to enjoy nature.

Saturday morning, October 9th, the Eco-Chicos Environmental Club participated in a hike at Placerita Canyon. Canyon science teacher, Dennis Yong, led the hike with a large group of students who joined the school club to appreciate nature and what surrounds them.

The leader of the club, Mr. Yong explained, “It was an opportunity to be out in nature, seeing our own local ecosystem.” Around 70 students participated in the 2.5 hours hike and explored the area, walking at least 5.5 miles.

Placerita is a protected state park, and is well known as the first place gold was discovered in California. The club explored nature and even saw wonderful wildlife around the park, such as birds, woodpeckers, and even deer.

Placerita includes a variety of animals that have been injured or orphaned, where they are rehabilitated or given a new home at the park where Placerita’s staff help take care of them. They hope to help the environment and preserve nature, which is Mr. Yong’s main goal for the club. He wants to include students in the act to help our world, and he hopes to inspire our generation to protect nature.

Placerita helps involve generations in the awareness of the planet and what is happening to forests and animals. The hope is that once we figure out that this is our doing, we will start preserving our planet. Eco-Chicos is a step in the right direction to take care of mother earth.
