Precise footwork, vibrant accessories, flowing skirts, and beautiful mariachi music only begins to describe the beauty of the traditional Spanish dance Folklórico.
Folklórico dance is a collection of many historical roots such as indigenous, European and African, creating the captivating performance that so many enjoy today. These traditional dances bring life to every place it is performed at, so it comes to no surprise why Canyon High School students are pushing for a permanent Folklórico/Spanish dance class.
In the past, Mrs. Guzman, one of Canyon’s Spanish teachers, tried to gain support for a class, but they were unable to due to the lack of students willing to participate. However, after having Folklórico operating under our Spanish Plus Club this year, everything drastically changed.
Alfredo Reveles, a sophomore at Canyon and the co-founder of our school’s developing Folklórico program, began having conversations with staff members, the student body, and even district administration in order to gain their unwavering support to create a permanent course.
As word spread, students began showing their support for the class, thus leading the number of students interested to skyrocket to its current number of about 20, with many more hopefully to come!
Reveles explained his ultimate goal for the class: “I started the Folklórico Club at Canyon High School to create a space for students of all backgrounds to come together to embrace, celebrate, and learn Latin culture through performances. I want to help students gain confidence in performing—just like it did for me.”
Currently, students meet every Thursday at lunch in room D-5 to learn the various Latin cultural dances, prepare for performances, and join in on an uplifting community.
As a matter of fact, on Feb. 6, 2026, a select group of club members made an impactful debut during Canyon’s annual talent rally. The crowd roared with astonishment as the group of six girls—Lucia Velasquez, Valeria Zavalza, Kelly Gonzalez, Leah Ruiz Pedraza, Maria Coronel, and Angela Nunez—danced along to Reveles’ incredible voice.
