Are you someone who enjoys TV shows, movies, or film in general? Then Canyon’s Film Club may just be the perfect fit for you! Film Club is a somewhat new club, with it only being formed about two years ago. Despite its recent appearance, it has already made a big impact on campus for many students.
The club presidents are Josh Ighodaro, Amelia Sivaborvorn, and Madelyn Martinez. All of them have an immense love for film and wanted an opportunity to showcase their interest. The first year the club started, many students participated, giving the club a great base to start on.
For the first semester every year, the club typically breaks students into groups. These groups must come up with a genre of movie they would like to create. The genre of the film can be horror, music videos, drama, or almost anything else the group is interested in.
The process of creating the film includes writing a script, finding the best parts for each actor, and directing it. Overall, it's an extremely tedious but rewarding activity. Once each group is done filming and editing their film, they are all sent to the Hart District Film Festival to be judged and ranked with the potential to even win an award!
Last semester, there were two groups. One group made a horror film, and the other group made a music video, which was a storytelling/lip syncing music video to the song “Yes I’m Changing” by Tame Impala.
The group that made the horror film, which included Brooke Swan, Michael Lynn, Julian Limon, and Charlotte Ortiz, did get an award nomination, making the entire group and club extremely proud.
Josh Ighodaro is not unfamiliar with nominations and awards. Last year, he received a nomination for his amazing acting and directing in one of his own films, which was an informational video on the harmful effects of AI usage.
Overall, Film Club is a club that has already had a big impact on its members and our campus. This club gives its members the opportunity to make friends and connections with others; so, if you ever get the chance to stop by during a meeting or even join the club, jump on that chance.
